Technical Mobile terms

There are many technical terms used on the mobile web and it is important to a business owner to understand some mobile technology, before they simply get a mobile website. A mobile version of a website should be more technically correct than a site on the regular web, simply because of the devices that use them.

Technical web terms

JavaScript

Scripting in not xhtml and should never be used on a mobile web page. A valid web page, will not use Javascripts.

Keypad

Navigation via a keypad can be a challenge. Every keypad is unique and qwerty is just one.

Qwerty Keyboard

Typing on a standard keyboard helps. Qwerty is simply the first (6) letters on a standard keyboard.

3G and 4G

3G and 4G is not technical, it simply means 3rd generation and 4th generation of mobile devices.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is simply the total volume of data that has been downloaded by a mobile device.

Markup code

W3C recommends using valid xhtml 1.1 Basic, to write all mobile web pages, since it the most widely supported by mobile browsers.

Flash

Flash animation uses proprietary code and not supported in a mobile context. Don't use it.
